Hakea Decurrens
Bushy Needlewood Variety
Australian Native Flora
White flowers of the Hakea Decurrens grow along the thick dense hardwood branch. Very difficult to tell the difference between a Grevillea and a Hakea shrub or small tree. One of the differences can be the leaves. The leaves of a Hakea is the same on both sides. This is not the same with a Grevillea. The leaves of a Hakea is alternately arranged on the branch and they are either slightly tapering or flat with both surfaces similar in colour.
Hakea Decurrens is a medium growing shrub. The young stems are red and the leaves are narrow and prickly. The stems can look the same as Grevilleas. The plant produces pinkish buds that open into white flowers with a hint of soft pink in the middle.
Hakea Needlewood flowers in winter and going into spring. The fruit is a woody capsule with two seeds. The shrub this flower is growing on is only a few feet tall so still very young.
