Rich and purple Iris Bud.
Purple Iris buds growing wild. Displaying a side leaf just under the bud of the Iris flower. Spathe is the papery covering surrounding emerging buds. It turns brown and protects the ovary as it develops.
The Iris is grown from a bud. The Iris flower typically flowers in Spring. Flowering early in Melbourne, Australia at the start of Winter.
I always find it interesting when capturing macro photography the things you dont see at the time of taking the image. To me the Spathe, which turns brown and paper like that is covering the bud to come looks like a ducks face. Unless im seeing things.
